Is the ISL or Founders League Better at Tennis?

Is the ISL or Founders League Better at Tennis?SocialTwist Tell-a-Friend

Basically I've been having a facebook argument with the number one from Hotchkiss about whether the ISL or Founders League is better at tennis.  I really need my fans to comment on this one or join in on the facebook argument. Check it out. I edited the posts a bit for content.

wow you're really saying that after the ISL has won 7 of the past 9 Class A championships and 6 of the past 11 Class B Championships. Maybe you've won a few in the past few years but we've been dominating you for the past decade

bro we only have 2 class a teams and they were both in it! Plus although the schools in Class B are smaller it is a significantly more competitive tournament with teams that are almost always stronger than the Class A champ with the exception of the Milton dynasty because they would've beaten anyone.

Matt let me add also:
2007 champs- milton
2006- milton... See More
2005 milton
2004 milton
2003 milton
2002 groton
2001 milton

Agreed.

where are new englands this year

Individuals are always at choate. For the team tournament there are multiple host sites, usually one mass team hosts and then choate hosts the other one. The finals are usually at choate too.

Isl tennis is definitely more competitive than the founders league tennis

Shapiro got absolutely owned. No contest.

So I don't know who all of you kids are, but I was Deerfield class of '95 and I've been following both ISL and Founders league tennis teams......there really is no competition. Founder's league tennis has a HUGE amount of depth whereas for the most part ISL teams comprise of around 4 or 5 good players then a total drop-off of talent. I think teams like Hotchkiss and Deerfield will be very good this year.

This is probably the most interesting comment that I've gotten since I started the blog. There's no denying that this year is a down year for ISL Tennis but it's hard to argue with Milton's success in Class A against Founders League teams. Milton is really the only ISL Team that plays Founders League teams because all the other good schools are Class B. I just realized that the Founders League doesn't include Brunswick and Hopkins. They would be the top two teams in the Founders League this year without a doubt.

I don't quite understand the lack of depth argument though. What's the basis for that statement? Over the past few years the ISL has had better number 1s in general than the Founders League but as far as depth goes I don't quite know how to gauge that other than with championships.

back in 95 we didn't even know the ISL exsisted. However I got to watch Hotchkiss and deerfield both play this year and I have no doubt in my mind. yes, hopkins without a doubt is the best team in new england in any class. Nolan paige was runner up at easter bowl. Enough said? however, even though Hotchkiss did lose to Brunswick 7-0 earlier this year, at least 3 matches went 3 sets and this was Hotchkiss 2nd day outdoors so they were very off their game. loomis beat Andover last year in the class A finals and won the spots 3-6 making the depth of their team so much better. This year Deerfield beat Loomis 4-3. Milton, arguebly the powerhouse of the ISL, isn't even undefeated anymore, and has no one besides Andrew Lebovitz who would match up with anyone on Hotchkiss or Deerfield's lineups. Another team to consider is Taft who did take the doubles point from Hotchkiss earlier this season. taft, along with deerfield and Hotchkiss is in the founders league as well.

It's obvious that a Founders League team will win Class A's because Milton is missing their strongest player. If Noah Bragg (their number 1 from last year) hadn't decided to take the season off to play tournaments I think that we would be crowning Milton ISL champs and New England Champs come the end of the season. In my mind there's no team in Class A that can match up with Bragg, Lebovitz at 1 and 2. Also if Milton were to add Bragg, they would have pretty solid depth.

On the other hand I think that Belmont Hill would likely beat any of the Class A teams. They have the best player in the ISL in Carl Reid '13 and their depth and experience is hard to match. They have four seniors and they've pretty much cleaned up in the ISL this year. It's a shame that there isn't one New England tournament instead of two divided ones.

Cam you have a good point about Noah Bragg for Milton but don't forget that Hotchkiss also has thier best player going to school in england this spring

Cam Woodsum said...

Really? I did not know that. Who's the player for hotchkiss that's in england? I know that shapiro and lightbourne played top 2 for hotchkiss last year and that ther are still the top 2 players.

JR Thornton was number one at Hotchkiss since his freshman year. He didn't play last season ('09) because he wanted to play individual tournaments and this year he took year abroad at Eton in England. With JR, Shapiro would play three and no one would match Hotchkiss' depth.

Cam Woodsum said...

There's no denying that Hotchkiss would absolutely clean up in class a (not that they aren't already)if JR were to play 1 but I wouldn't go as far as to say that "nobody would match their depth." Even with JR I don't think that Hotchkiss beats Hopkins because there's no way that JR beats Nolan Paige and with a lineup of Berkowitz, Einbinder, Astrachan, Dobkin and Bartimer I don't see Hotchkiss winning. Both Brunswick and Hopkins thrive off of their depth.
